This past summer’s annual Empire Challenge continued for the 5th year to enlist Jeffrey Holmes Photography as the lead event photographer for Boomer Esiason’s annual dual between the High School All-Stars of New York City versus Long Island students. The event starts off with an All-U-Can-Eat Tailgate Party sponsored by Outback Steakhouse for a fabulous buffet! This family-oriented event includes an expo and fun activities prior to the game, a raffle and, of course, the evening highlight is the Empire Challenge  football game pitting the best of New York City and Long Island.

While not the everyday sports photographer, I do have the experience of photographing a wide variety of events. A very versatile photographer in New York City. I most enjoy capturing the fun on the food swollen faces of the children. Their thrill on the slides.

Chris Dixon and George Duverger of HUNCH.com corporate portrait for LaPresse in Montreal, Canada

The assignment from LaPresse, a french newspaper and web organization in Montreal, requested a corporate portrait in an environmental style for a feature article on the New York web development scene. The assignment was to photograph Chris Dixon and George Duverger of Hunch in their New York office. Upon arrival, I was first taken with the music playing throughout the space. For a moment I thought I had misplaced my Ipod because what I heard was classic rock. This was a bit out of place for a band of 20 and 30 something web techs! Chris remarked somethin of the effect of, “It all comes around sooner or later.”

I scouted the location for the best setups and then went to work assembling my lighting. Grids and Grid boxes are my favorite lighting modifier. As I toured their offices, the Hunch logo on the wall and the work area of the programmers struck my interest as the best setups.

The company's mission is to build a 'taste graph' connecting every person on the web with their affinity for every entity (camera, car, book, anything!) on the web. Translated and adapted from an article in LaPresse, Montreal, Canada.

Frenchman, Georges Duverger worked for a few years in Montreal then felt the call to find a new horizon. He contemplated Silicon Valley, Toronto… He finally decided finally upon New York, which accomodated with the beginning of the year. He now works for the Hunch.com web site.

It was a good web developer environment. It had access to an Internet site that helped it to be integrated into the technological scene of the city. Adoptahacker.com (literally: “adopt a pirate”) was created for people who come to work in the metropolis. “Impassioned members of the community open their house with the talented technophiles” which come “to taste” the technological scene of New York. Georges Duverger found a place there, where to live at the time of its first days in the city, then a friend to make known to him the various events intended for the community techno. It also unearthed a joint tenant there. “I like much of the city, says as he sat at the bar of the Ace Hotel. A place which gathers all that New York counts of technological workers. Culturally, I feel more close to New York than California.”

One can say that while settling in New York, he gained the first prize. He works today with a “band of engineers of MIT” sheparded by Chris Dixon, a contractor and well-known investor in his field. “The team around Hunch is extraordinary,” he says. I learn more quickly than I would learn in Montreal. For the first time of my life, I have an owner who is able to push to the maximum.” It’s owner, Chris Dixon, which he praises of young the 26 year old developer. He recruited as if he were still in Montreal.

He is an excellent programmer who has a good sense of the design. It is rare to have both”, he says. He admits that he pains more and more to find developers of talent in New York. “We all are in competition for the best.” He is not the only one to complain about the shortage of manpower. Brooke Moreland, who launched her site, Fashism, two years ago has the same sentiment.

Event Photographer Comment: Digital Sandbox is a great venue for technology events. WiFi is available for attendees. From a photographer’s perspective, the lighting is substandard. The room used for the exhibition hall is dark with the spot lighting, exposed ceiling with vents and conduit painted black. This is not a great environment for bounce flash lighting. I make it work by shooting manual strobe and over powering the ambient light. Exposure and color correction is adjusted in post production of RAW files. The rooms where presentations and programs are generally held have white ceilings with fluorescent lighting and make photographing the speakers easier. However in the end, program producers should consider adding supplemental lighting to the stage area.

Italian Gift Products showcased at New York International Gift Fair

Promoting Italian craftsmanship in gift products, a sector where innovation in the choice of new materials and styles is ever more crucial, while at the same consolidating the positive trend in exports to the US. These are the objectives of the official delegation that the Italian Trade Commission (ICE) is organizing for the winter edition of the International Gift Fair (www.nyigf.com), that took place in New York from January 30th to February 3rd in the Javits Convention Center.

The event was photographed for Italian Trade Commission and Regione Umbria by Jeffrey Holmes Photography, a professional New York photographer is a creative corporate event photographer. ICE has engaged him as their photographer for events and event photography New York since 2005.

I was very impressed with the recent New York exhibition. The most unique offering in my opinion was ceramic place mats including as a part of a matching place setting Maioliche Originali Deruta.

(Click on photo to see gallery) Matching ceramic place mats featured at the Italian Trade Commision and Regione Umbria Exhibit at the New York International Gift Fair at Javits Center in New York City on January 30 thru February 3, 2011. The New York International Gift Fair is considered the most important event in the North American market for the gift industry, and it takes place every six months. It typically is attended by 2,900 exhibitors, spread over a 60,000 square meter surface and was visited by 45,000 people.

In the light of positive feedback from last year, ICE decided to upgrade the organizational and promotional support available to the Italian firms which will take place in the future exhibitions. Organizing an official delegation will help promote the products of firms who manufacture or trade in generic gift products, silverware, collectors’ items, crystal ware, porcelain and ceramics, paper and cardboard, writing instruments, leather goods, bombonnières, art prints and kitchen products.

The Italian participation to the Fair is part of a wider promotional strategy on the North American market by ICE. The event will be an opportunity to showcase Italian craftsmanship districts and their products in front of US wholesalers and the specialized press. At the same time, ICE wishes to facilitate new contacts between US importers and distributors and Italian firms. After the positive results from the last years, existing contacts have to be consolidated and new ones have to be developed.

The presence of Italian industry in this sector (mainly made of small firms relying on craftsmanship and heavily specialized in high-end products) is particularly important when the size of the US market is taken into consideration. Imports of gift products rose by almost 8% in January-November 2006 compared to the previous year. In the last years imports for this sector have risen by almost 20%.

Italy – the fourth biggest supplier for the US – has been penalized in the last few years by the rise of the euro over the dollar. Despite an increase in exports volumes of 4,7% in 2005 and 3,7% in 2006, its market share has eroded slightly to 7,8%. While it maintains a leading position vis-à-vis other European countries, Italian industry is facing a challenge by its Asian competitors, who are progressively taking hold of the low end of the market. Gift 2007 will therefore be an opportunity to prove that Italian industry aims to consolidate in the high-end of the market, even for gift products.

Ricoh Accelerates Business Shift with Global Managed Document Services Expansion. Focus is squarely on improving customers’ bottom line.

Ricoh Managed Document Services New York Press Conference photographed by corporate event photographer Jeffrey Holmes

Photographer Jeffrey Holmes is a professional photographer in New York, corporate portrait photography, portrait photographers, New York event photographer, photographer for events, event photography New York.

In a global event, held in Tokyo, London & New York, Ricoh Company, Ltd., a worldwide leader in digital office equipment and advanced document management solutions and services, today announced an investment designed to aggressively accelerate its shift to a services business model as a key growth strategy, building upon its core foundation of industry-leading hardware and software technologies and document and IT-related services. To advance this shift, Ricoh plans to invest $300 million USD over three years in its global Managed Document Services (MDS) infrastructure, underscoring the company’s commitment to its continued partnership with its customers, helping them to grow their bottom line through effective document management, improved workflow and increased productivity.

New Research Reveals C-Suite Mistakenly Believes Document-Related Costs are Insignificant.
Based on research from industry analyst firm IDC and Ricoh MDS engagements, a company with annual revenue of $250 million USD can save more than $6 million USD annually* through effective document management, according to Angele Boyd, IDC Group VP, General Manager, Imaging/Output Document Solutions & SMB. This includes savings of observed costs, such as printing, as well as unobserved costs connected to IT support, documents and records management, environmental, regulatory compliance and end-user productivity.

Ricoh Managed Document Services

Ricoh Managed Document Services New York Press Conference. Jeffrey Holmes is a professional photographer in New York, corporate portrait photography, portrait photographers, New York event photographer, photographer for events, event photography New York.

Ricoh also unveiled new research from a series of global focus groups and surveys with C-suite executives and senior IT managers. The research, conducted in partnership with IDC, found that while businesses are aware that they need to gain more insight into their information and document workflows, they continue to have little understanding of the specific amount of money spent in this area. This is largely attributed to the lack of consolidation of both observed and unobserved costs and fragmented distribution of these costs across different departments within the organization.

In addition, there is low awareness among executives of the positive impact a document management strategy could have on the business, including how much could be saved and the overall impact on the bottom line.

Harnessing the power of information contained in documents and processes as a core company asset is critical since the way organizations communicate and conduct business is changing at an unprecedented pace. Ricoh’s accelerated shift to services, with a strong focus on MDS, will help customers to become more responsive to the continual flow of information as they address the changes in their industries.

“Ricoh recognizes that global workforce trends, new technologies and the economy are transforming the way our customers must approach document management. It is now a key priority for CIOs to ensure their organizations are ready to meet the challenges brought by these forces,” said Mr. Shiro Kondo, President and CEO, Ricoh Company, Ltd. “Therefore, we are making additional investments to help lead our customers in the implementation of secure information infrastructure solutions that help them to become more agile, responsive and productive. Through our on-site and off-site support, we help our customers stay focused on revenue-generating activities, while we do what we do best – optimize workflows.”

A Holistic Approach
Ricoh’s investment in its global MDS infrastructure is designed to strengthen its best practices approach and technologies across its global footprint and help the company achieve an annual MDS revenue target of $3.3 billion USD by FY2013.
Investments will focus on reinforcing Ricoh’s key strengths and leadership including:

  • Enhancing Ricoh’s adaptive customer-focused approach, in which Ricoh partners with businesses to help them meet their goals. This approach includes development of Ricoh’s global change management professional services offering, based upon Prosci’s ADKAR® change management methodology, which is designed to help employees permanently change costly document-related behaviors. In addition, Ricoh has globally adopted the ITIL® services delivery framework, which is the most widely used approach to IT services management. Ricoh is also increasing the number of services teams professionally certified in the ITIL® and the ADKAR® methodologies.
  • Improving Ricoh’s holistic, vendor-agnostic approach to information, infrastructure and process management. This approach allows Ricoh to manage a company’s entire fleet, regardless of manufacturer. This holistic approach will be further enhanced as Ricoh accelerates the delivery of a suite of cloud-type tools for device and print management, optimization and decision support.
  • Broadening Ricoh’s global MDS workforce as well as globally standardizing its sales and services training. This is critical to maintaining a globally consistent approach to services delivery, regardless of where the customer’s offices are located. Ricoh has one of the industry’s largest direct sales and services organizations, which currently includes 30,000 services professionals.

*Projected annual savings in document management costs for a typical company of this size based upon IDC research and select Ricoh MDS engagements. Individual company results may vary and actual cost savings are not guaranteed.

ELEW RockJazz inspires Entrepreneurs

Eric Lewis-ELEW RockJazz Music

Eric Lewis-ELEW RockJazz Music performs at NYEW

A modern day pop artist and musical revolutionary, piano iconoclast, ELEW is making a substantial impression on the music world with a thunderous new style of playing: an inspired melding of ragtime, rock and pop that he calls Rockjazz. Photographed by a great event photographer Jeffrey Holmes. His amazing portfolio can be seen at www.jeffreyholmes.com

ELEW has toured the world, recorded, and performed continuously with Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, Elvin Jones, Roy Hargrove, and Cassandra Wilson, among others. He won the 1999 Thelonious Monk International Piano Competition, his mesmerizing piano theatrics even then hinting at the new musical paradigm he would one day create. Now, in the jazz tradition of interpreting popular tunes of the day, much like Art Tatum and John Coltrane, ELEW has turned to rock, combining a guitarist’s approach to the piano with an explosively physical style of playing that would be at home in any arena. An imposing force even before he stands (not sits) behind the piano, ELEW is known for playing his instrument like an athlete plays a sport—going inside the instrument, testing the limits of his body, pushing through the pain and exhaustion….but never stopping.
