The Manhattan Chamber of Commerce presented a panel discussion that focused on the role of the business community in pressuring the legislature to approve same-sex marriage. The event was held at the new Met Life Conference Center at 6th Avenue and 42nd Street. The event was photographed by event photographer new york, Jeffrey Holmes Photography for the MCC.  The business community has a stake in this issue because of employee benefits, payroll taxes, talent retention and money will be made when tens of thousands of couples marry here in New York City rather than traveling to other states.

“Economic Impact of Gay Marriage” took place on Monday, March 14, 2011 and was organized by the Manhattan Chamber of Commerce, hosted by MetLife and sponsored by Bloomingdale’s, Gay City News, Microsoft and the Riverside Church.T

People have figured out that when permitted to marry, the gay community will be more likely to hire a realtor, purchase a home, buy insurance, travel on a honeymoon and use the services of a caterer, wedding planner, florist, and all of the other services engaged by traditional couples getting married.

Institutional Investor's Africa Investment Forum

Event Photographer in New York, Jeffrey Holmes was Institutional Investor’s choice to photograph the Africa Investment Forum as it has for their international forums since 2004. This long standing relationship demonstrates the confidence they have in his ability to consistently get the images Institutional Investor Events needs for promotional and media release purposes. This assignment was particularly challenging as it was held in the West Room of the Metropolitan Club, New York. While it is a gorgeously rich room featuring a stunning ceiling mural. This is a very dark venue. Added to the challenge was the dark skin tones. Limited light includes 4 windows on the west wall and only eight dimly lighted wall sconces. Generally stage lighting is provided by 2 spots for video recording. The wide f-stop range between stage and audience called upon all of Jeffrey’s talents in order to make great event photography. His camera of choice is the Canon 5D Mark2 with its minimum noise at higher ISO setting and 1Ds Mark2 for its 8 frames per second capture rate.

The event was eye opening as to the future of the continent. Africa is making significant strides in focusing global investors’ interest on the opportunities there. Africa’s new vision of its future highlights the potential that can be found in these nations while addressing many of the obstacles that have hindered foreign investment in the past. This long-term, comprehensive strategy for increasing foreign investments means applying the lessons learned and building on the comparative strengths of the region’s markets and key sectors. In response to these steps forward as well as significantly increased interest among US institutions, Institutional Investor’s Africa Investment Conference is the premier, Africa-focused event in the US in 2011. With the theme, The Gateway to Opportunity, the event embodied Africa’s vision for sustained economic development driven by targeted, informed foreign investment. The Conference was the ideal forum for the necessary exchange of information among senior decision-makers from the region’s governmental and regulatory authorities, executives from Africa’s leading corporations, and the US institutional investors who are interested in learning more about the opportunities in Africa. The Africa Investment Conference supplied investors with the macro information they require about governmental, regulatory, and economic policies coupled with intensive examinations of key sector initiatives, including: Capital markets and banking developments; Tax and legal reforms; Monetary and fiscal policies; Infrastructure public-private partnerships; and Project and leverage financing opportunities in oil and gas, telecoms, transportation, tourism, health services, metals/mining, agribusiness, renewable energy, and power.

This years program included presentations from key government officials and regulators, panel discussions among corporate executives and large US investors, and case studies focusing on some of the region’s more notable achievements. The event photography of Jeffrey Holmes is included in this post with more images available in the Institutional Investor Africa Investment Forum gallery.

Event Photographer Comment: Digital Sandbox is a great venue for technology events. WiFi is available for attendees. From a photographer’s perspective, the lighting is substandard. The room used for the exhibition hall is dark with the spot lighting, exposed ceiling with vents and conduit painted black. This is not a great environment for bounce flash lighting. I make it work by shooting manual strobe and over powering the ambient light. Exposure and color correction is adjusted in post production of RAW files. The rooms where presentations and programs are generally held have white ceilings with fluorescent lighting and make photographing the speakers easier. However in the end, program producers should consider adding supplemental lighting to the stage area.

Young Leaders for Tomorrow, MLT shapes them today.

Management Leadership for Tomorrow

Management Leadership for Tomorrow is a favorite non-profit for which I am their preferred photographer for events photography.

Here is a summary, from their web site, of the great things that MLT does for the world today and tomorrow:

MLT is the premier career development institution that equips high potential African Americans, Hispanics and Native Americans with the key ingredients—skills, coaching and door-opening relationships—that unlock their potential. By cracking the code on career potential, MLT is developing the next generation of minority leaders, for the corporate, non-profit and entrepreneurial sectors, who will in turn have transformational impact on our communities.

MLT delivers programming that puts minorities on the fast-track to success at every stage of their careers: from College through MBA and the Executive levels.

MLT is a leading source of minority talent for top graduate business schools and for many of the nation’s premier corporations including Citi, Goldman Sachs, Google, McKinsey & Co, PepsiCo and Target.  MLT’s innovative solution has also resulted in strategic partnerships with leading philanthropies such as New Profit, Inc. and The Starr Foundation.  MLT has been featured on the cover of Fortune and in CNN’s “Black in America 2: Tomorrow’s Leaders.”

There is a leadership pipeline crisis in the US.

Although comprising nearly 30% of the US population, African Americans, Hispanics and Native Americans comprise only 3% of senior leaders in corporations, non-profits and entrepreneurial ventures.
Despite having broader preparation, access and financial support for the best colleges and graduate schools, these minorities continue to fall out of the leadership pipeline at alarming rates.  As a result:
  • Corporations, non-profits and entrepreneurial ventures struggle to attract and retain the best diverse talent they need to achieve their goals.
  • The individuals who are most connected to our struggling communities, and therefore most motivated to improve them, are not in a position to make those solutions possible.

Because conventional wisdom is that higher education ensures the American dream, we have not invested in giving those who make it to college the other ingredients they need to realize their full potential as leaders.

MLT is the Solution

The path to leadership is not taught in school.

It takes more than classroom education to create leaders. It takes hard and soft skills.  It takes early exposure to high-impact career opportunities.  It takes an understanding of the path to the senior levels; and it takes inspiring leaders and mentors.

Many organizations focus on providing minorities with access to educational opportunities and preparation for academic success.  MLT delivers key skills that are not taught in any classroom and that are critical to fulfilling one’s potential. Virtually every senior leader would say that they would not be where they are today without some or all of those key ingredients, yet these ingredients are not taught in even the best classrooms and instead are delivered through informal channels to which minorities have limited access:

  • A roadmap of specific steps to take to achieve one’s short and long-term goals
  • Coaching to develop the specific skills needed to distinguish oneself as a high performer
  • Mentorship to avoid career-limiting mistakes
  • Door-opening relationships that can lead to a “big break”
  • High-performing peers who provide motivation and support

MLT has formalized the delivery of these ingredients, filling a major gap in our education system and significantly broadening the pipeline of senior minority leaders who can catalyze change in our communities.

ELEW RockJazz inspires Entrepreneurs

Eric Lewis-ELEW RockJazz Music

Eric Lewis-ELEW RockJazz Music performs at NYEW

A modern day pop artist and musical revolutionary, piano iconoclast, ELEW is making a substantial impression on the music world with a thunderous new style of playing: an inspired melding of ragtime, rock and pop that he calls Rockjazz. Photographed by a great event photographer Jeffrey Holmes. His amazing portfolio can be seen at www.jeffreyholmes.com

ELEW has toured the world, recorded, and performed continuously with Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, Elvin Jones, Roy Hargrove, and Cassandra Wilson, among others. He won the 1999 Thelonious Monk International Piano Competition, his mesmerizing piano theatrics even then hinting at the new musical paradigm he would one day create. Now, in the jazz tradition of interpreting popular tunes of the day, much like Art Tatum and John Coltrane, ELEW has turned to rock, combining a guitarist’s approach to the piano with an explosively physical style of playing that would be at home in any arena. An imposing force even before he stands (not sits) behind the piano, ELEW is known for playing his instrument like an athlete plays a sport—going inside the instrument, testing the limits of his body, pushing through the pain and exhaustion….but never stopping.
