“Using her influence and global platform to bring attention to the challenges faced by our community, she is committed to advancing fairness and equality and improving the lives of LGBT people. We are grateful for her work, and proud to recognize her accomplishments with our Ally for Equality Award,” says HRC President Chad Griffin of Sigourney’s contributions to the community.

The cast and filmmakers of “The Imitation Game” was honored at the gala dinner. The Weinstein Company film, which stars actor Benedict Cumberbatch, tells a story of the late British cryptographer and computer scientist Alan Turing, who developed a way of cracking previously-unbreakable Nazi codes. Turing was also gay, he was arrested and prosecuted when he was caught in a same-sex relationship.  His government chemically castrated and he later committed suicide.

But on a lighter note the event also featured a performance from singer, songwriter, poet, and HRC supporter Mary Lambert – known for her duet with Macklemore & Ryan Lewis in “Same Love.”

It was my honor to serve as the event photographer for Institutional Investor magazine’s 12th Annual Hedge Fund Industry Awards,

The awards recognize the hedge funds, funds of hedge funds, investment consultants, endowments, foundations, family offices, corporate funds, public funds, sovereign funds and rising stars that stood out for their performance innovation, achievements and contributions to the industry in the past year.

The selection process: Following a public call for nominations, the editorial staff of Institutional Investor magazine selects award nominees based on how strongly candidates, both those put forward via the call for nominations, and those independently identified by the editorial staff, meet the criteria for their respective categories. Once the nominees are publicly announced, the magazine group then conducts a wide survey of U.S. institutional investors and invites them to vote for the manager nominees. Hedge fund managers are also invited to vote for the investor nominees. Institutional Investor’s editorial staff analyzes the results of the voting to determine the winners, who are announced at the annual awards dinner and ceremony.

The World Piano Competition showcased one of their shining stars in Carnegie Hall’s Zankel Hall, Alexander Yakovlev, WPC Gold Medalist in 2012. Now in my second year of capturing the New York performances of the World Piano Competition. These young, classical pianists are the brilliant future

Alexander Yakovlev, was the Gold Medal prize winner at the 2012 World Piano Competition in Cincinnati. Alexander performed his solo recital as part of his Gold Prize package. Alexander Yakovlev was born in Rostov-on-Don, Russia. He has won more than fifty-five 1st place prizes at piano competitions around the world. The World Piano Competition’s mission is to promote and celebrate the art of classical piano music. The WPC offers performance opportunities for pianists from around the world, ranging in age from five to 32. It has been my pleasure to be the performance event photographer for the last three New York performances of WPC winners.

Performance Event Photographer’s Note: Great performance halls like Carnegie Hall or previous concerts at Lincoln Center have strict rules regarding taking pictures during performances. This obviously poses a crucial problem… how can I be an performance event photographer when you can’t photograph during the event? The solution to capturing performance quality photography, I always have just one request. It is that the artist wear their performance attire during their warm up period. I use a Canon 5DM3 on quiet shutter so as not to disturb the artist while they rehearse.

The performance was covered in the Cincinatti.com. News coverage included a photo provided by the performance event photographer Jeffrey Holmes Photography.

As a New York event photographer, there are certain events that are very special. I have been covering W!SE events for the past decade.  Students from the top ranked schools attend a ceremony hosted by the New York Stock Exchange, Each year this ceremony reassures me that today’s youth are in could care.

  • Here are a few of the highlight I took away from the ceremony. The High School for Math, Science & Engineering at City College in New York City ranked first.
  • The W!SE Certification Program is offered in 28 states with 75% of participating students graduating with w!se Certification in Financial Literacy (CFL™)

Working in Support of Education (w!se), a leading New York City based educational not-for-profit, today announced the winners of the inaugural “100 Best w!se High Schools Teaching Personal Finance” during a ceremony at the New York Stock Exchange photographed by Jeffrey Holmes, event photographer.

The release of the rankings marks the 10th anniversary of the w!se Financial Literacy Certification Program, which provides teachers with a curriculum and instructional resources to teach personal finance and to measure student knowledge through the w!se standardized Certification Test. Students passing the test are designated Certified Financially Literate™, which shows that they are financially capable when they graduate. Since its introduction, the program has become integral to personal finance instruction in thousands of classrooms across the United States and is now offered in 28 states.

The 100 Best w!se High Schools Teaching Personal Finance recognizes the top performing high schools in w!se’s national network. The No.1 ranked school is High School for Math, Science & Engineering at City College in New York City. Other high schools among the top 25 are situated in Utah, Indiana, Tennessee, Nebraska, Virginia, New Jersey, Illinois, South Carolina and New York State.

The schools were honored with banners, as well as a trophy for the No. 1 ranked school at a ceremony featuring the following speakers photographed by event photographer, Jeffrey Holmes::

The fastest growing age group declaring bankruptcy is young adults, ages 19 to 25. The 100 Best w!se High Schools Teaching Personal Finance ranking seeks to shine the spotlight on the importance of personal finance education. Only 13 states require personal finance instruction in high school and less than 10 percent of high school students take any course on money management before they graduate. The level of financial literacy is particularly acute among people with no post-secondary education and with incomes below $25,000. According to the FINRA Investor Education Foundation, Hispanics and African Americans, who are disproportionately represented in these education and income segments, are especially vulnerable.

“We created the Financial Literacy Certification Program to address the chronic lack of financial literacy among young people,” said Phyllis Frankfort, President & CEO of w!se. “It is imperative that students be exposed to personal financial education before they graduate high school, so they have the knowledge and skills to break the cycle of poverty and to start on the path toward financial well being.”

“We are proud participants in the w!se Certification Program,” said Crystal Bonds, Principal of the High School for Math, Science & Engineering at City College. “We actually hear from our graduates who tell us of specific ways they apply what they learned from the program in managing their money. It’s wonderful because students really benefit from being financially capable young adults.”

The second through fifth place schools include Itineris Early College High School, West Jordan, UT; Coeur d’Alene High School, Coeur d’Alene, ID; Utah County Academy of Sciences, Orem, UT; and Aviation High School, Queens, NY. A complete list of the top 25 schools is included as an appendix.

w!se determined the ranking with support from an Advisory Board comprising experts from academia and finance. The predominant factor was the average score on the Financial Literacy Certification Test with consideration given to eligibility for free lunch and the proportion of test takers to the school population.

Mr. Stovall, of Standard & Poor’s, said: “w!se provides the basis for achieving one of the three pillars of success (Health, Wealth and Happiness) by teaching financial preparedness.”

The Financial Literacy Certification Program has touched the lives of more than 250,000. On average, 75 percent of students pass the Certification Test every year, graduating financially literate. The ranking will be published annually, giving all schools that participate in the Financial Literacy Certification Program an opportunity to earn a place on it each year.

For more information about w!se, contact info(at)wise-ny(dot)org, or visit the program website http://www.wise-ny.org/ for the most recent program news and updates.

About Working In Support of Education (w!se): Working In Support of Education (w!se) is a national not-for-profit dedicated to improving the lives of young people through programs that develop financial literacy and readiness for college and the workforce. Our Initiatives are built on five pillars – relevancy, real world experiences, strong partnerships, volunteerism, and evaluation. The standardized w!se Financial Literacy Certification Test is administered by schools participating in the Financial Literacy Certification Program to measure knowledge, skills and behavioral changes in students after a unit or course on personal finance.

Israeli entrepreneurs, government and business leaders gathered for the Israel Dealmakers Summit. Photos by New York event photographer Jeffrey Holmes.

Israel Minister of Economy, Naftali Bennett, was the featured keynote speaker ending the first day of the Israel Dealmakers Summit. Bennet’s speech included the following quotes (Photos by New York event photographer Jeffrey Holmes):

  • “When you collaborate with an Israeli company, it’s like taking a shot of innovation.” “Everyone around us with ideas, whether in Tel Aviv or Herzliya, but do not grow by big companies. We’re not good at it and there is a lot of criticism on the subject but I’m so not sure it’s that bad.”
  • “The Israeli advantage is not a refractory large company but we are good at innovation. When you collaborate with an Israeli company, it’s like taking a shot of innovation and that’s great added value.”… “Yes, Israelis will not give you a complete sentence or even get out of the elevator before they enter it, but when you collaborate with Israeli companies you not only get a product but continuous innovation.”
  • “Israeli companies are not looking for just one transaction but regularly understand the needs of international society and how to work with and will do anything to undermine that goal.’s Exactly like I did learn how to take control of the plane – if you can not get through the door or window, then try through the roof. The advantage of Israeli companies – you tell them what you need and have been catering to the work.”
  • Bennett spoke of making Beersheba the capital of the cyberworld and how they produce true innovation. “We brought a high-tech park in Be’er Sheva in 4 sectors where one has an intelligence unit which has young talent from the university. There are technology companies and venture capital funds. Imagine what lunch looks like lunch there. On one side sits a young soldier from Modiin, while the young programmer from the Graduate University. Good things can happen in this conversation – and I’m not just talking about marriage. Innovation is not something you can demand or pass legislation forcing companies to produce innovation. This happens because of the interaction between people.”

Interpeace engaged the services of New York event photographer, Jeffrey Holmes, to document the event and capture compelling images to showcase this premier event.Over 150 new constitutions have been created since 1975, and as many as 20 national constitutions are reformed or adopted each year. Recent months and the ‘Arab Spring’ have proven that this development continues. Constitutional reforms have been, or are, on the agenda in Tunisia, Egypt, Morocco, Nepal, Southern Sudan, Zimbabwe and now Libya. A modern constitution needs to be legitimate in the eyes of the people, but achieving this is a challenge. Often national and international constitution-makers feel out in the cold as there has been no comprehensive resource on the options for constitution-making and reform. The design, implementation and management of these processes, in an inclusive way, create the foundations for lasting peace. The stakes are high. If the process goes wrong the seeds of future conflict and violence will be sown. Interpeace, an international peacebuilding organization, is now filling this critical gap.  Download the complete handbook.

“Members of constituent assemblies or constitutional commissions, government officials, politicians, civil society, activists, donors, foreign advisors, policy analysts, academics, and international aid actors can all benefit. It captures the knowledge and weighs up the options so they can make up their own minds on what will work best for their society,” highlights Scott M. Weber, Director-General of Interpeace. Lakhdar Brahimi, who provided the foreword for the handbook, highlights: “I wish ‘Constitution-making and reform: options for the process’ had been available to the international community when I was the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Afghanistan. This book asks the right questions.”

Interpeace has been enabling societies to build lasting peace since 1994.

Interpeace is an independent, international peace building organization and strategic partner of the United Nations. It were created by the United Nations in 1994. We became an independent organization in 2000 while maintaining a unique partnership with the UN. As a result, we operate either as an independent NGO or as a UN initiative.

The organization is governed by a Governing Council made up of prominent individuals from the government, international and business sectors. The three main bodies of Interpeace, the Governing Council, Advisory Council and the Secretariat, provide the necessary support to over 300 peace builders in the field. Consisting exclusively of people from the societies in which we are active, our local teams lead the programmes on the ground.

Interpeace’s Work

Their approach contributes to building lasting peace through inclusive and nationally-led processes of change. The added value is the tested approach in strengthening capacities within societies to manage conflict without resorting to violence or coercion. Peace building must be led and owned from within a society so they work exclusively with national teams in countries across Africa, Asia, Central America, Europe and the Middle East.

In 2010, Interpeace was supporting initiatives in 16 countries and territories, four of which are implemented through our United Nations arm, the Joint Programme Unit for United Nations/Interpeace. They support initiatives in: Burundi, Cyprus, Central America regional program on youth, Guinea-Bissau, Israel, Liberia, Palestine, Rwanda, Somali Region, Timor-Leste.

A thematic program covering Constitution Making for Peace, a handbook on options for making and reforming constitutions. They combine local peace building knowledge with the latest in international thinking to assist the international community, including the United Nations, to play a more effective role in supporting peace building efforts around the world.

Interpeace Finances and Support

They are a non-profit organization. Peace building work is funded by generous voluntary contributions from governments, multilateral organizations, foundations and private individuals. 16 donor governments and multilateral organizations work through the Donor Committee.

2010 expenditures of US $ 23 million reflects the growing demand for our support and expertise from governments, civil society, donor countries, UN agencies and other international organizations.2010 financial reports were, for the second year, in accordance with the highest financial reporting standard – IFRS.
